Please note that this trip is dependent on river levels. Although the destination may shift, we’ll remain within the stunning Stone Mountain Provincial Park and McDonald Valley.

How is the water situation?
You won’t have to worry about water on this trip! A 2L hydration bladder and a 1L water bottle will be sufficient for your needs. However, be aware that river levels can rise and cause discoloration from runoff. It’s always wise to carry a water filter when venturing into the backcountry.

Where do we meet?
We’ll gather at the Fort Nelson Visitor Centre at 9:30 AM on August 22, 2025.

Are campfires allowed every night?
This depends on the current wildfire situation. It’s important to check for any fire bans before your trip. In some areas along the trail, campfires may not be permitted regardless of the fire ban status.

Is alcohol permitted?
Yes, you’re welcome to bring your own alcohol, but it will not be provided.

What are the bathroom arrangements?
You’ll need to dig catholes for bathroom use, ensuring they are at least 200 feet (60 meters) away from water sources, trails, or campsites. We recommend using the buddy system when venturing away from camp and carrying bear spray. As a fun rule, if you go to the bathroom, bring back a stick for the campfire. There is an outhouse available at Wokkpash Lake.

How many guides will accompany us?
An experienced guide will be with the group to offer support and expertise. They will carry an In-Reach Satellite communication device for two-way messaging and emergency contact with helicopter support if necessary. A local helicopter service will be informed of our location throughout the trip.

Will you provide a detailed itinerary?
Yes, we will send a detailed day-to-day itinerary. However, please note that river levels and weather conditions can affect our plans. Flooding can sometimes make certain river crossings impassable, so flexibility is key.

What about bears and wildlife?
We prioritize bear safety by travelling in groups. Expect to encounter both small and large wildlife on the trail. Previous trips have noted porcupines and marmots as challenges, so please keep your supplies in dry bags. Food storage can be tricky, but we do our best to keep it bear-safe. Guides will carry a firearm for added safety, and bear-proof dry bags are available for rent.

Are dogs allowed?
No, dogs are not permitted on this trip, except for the guides’ dogs.

Is there cell service on the trail?
There is no cell service while hiking. If you have a satellite communication device, we recommend bringing it along.

Should we tip the guides?
The success of our trips hinges on our wonderful staff. If you receive excellent service, we encourage you to tip the guides. There’s no set amount—just whatever you feel is appropriate. Tipping is a great way to show appreciation for their hard work and dedication.

Communication during the trip
Peak Wyld Co utilizes satellite email systems for emergencies, specifically Inreach Garmin devices.

We’ll be meeting in Fort Nelson at 9:30 AM. If you need to coordinate carpooling from Fort St. John, we can organize that as the date approaches. After our meet-and-greet at the Visitor Centre in Fort Nelson, we’ll drive to the trailhead, which is approximately 1.5 hours away. We’ll park our vehicles at the trailhead. The trailhead is big enough for all our vehicles.

Participants are responsible for their travel costs to reach the trailhead. Peak Wyld Co will not provide transportation to the trailhead, but to help reduce congestion at the parking area, we will assist in organizing carpooling during our backpack preparation night (Zoom meeting). If you choose to carpool, we recommend splitting gas costs, approximately $100.

For those flying to the location, here are a couple of options:

  1. Central Mountain Air provides air service to Fort Nelson. The most economical route is to fly from Vancouver to Prince George with a major carrier like Air Canada or WestJet, then take a Central Mountain Air flight from Prince George to Fort Nelson.
  1. Alternatively, you can fly to Fort St. John and arrange ground transportation with Peak Wyld Co from there. Please reach out to us if you would like to discuss this option further.
